NH Fishing the Connecticut River Fly Fishing

Bill's River Blog

August 9, 2007

Good morning to all anglers and repeat offenders in the trout harassment realm. And I know there's a lot of you. I've heard a few of you all reply on the blog and I hope it is at least somewhat entertaining and informational.

Well, what's the hubbub BUB? Well I'll tell Ya! The last week or so has truly fallen into the adage of, "good Lord willing and the creek don't rise". Well the creeks have risen,(big time) and they are ugly. In the past six or seven days or so we've had torrential rains nearly every other day. Which in turn has blown all the small tributaries, that means that the water below these tributaries where they enter the Connecticut has been blown,(high, dark, and muddy). We haven't been able to do any float trips in the past week. It would rain and blow out the river, a day it would start looking promising again then it would rain again and blow them out all over again. It's been frustrating, but even with the river being blown the stretches upstream of these tributaries are still below average water flows.

But not to get discouraged, the fishing is still fabulous. The river has been very user friendly albeit with some sections unfishable it has made others more crowded. Other than people being out there and maybe in your favorite spot or two, you can still catch plenty of fish. I had to gentleman out just last night for an evening guide (4hrs). Between the two of them they landed fifteen fish and had many other strikes and more fish on. They were very pleased and commented "That's not to bad for an evening fish". That's only one section of river. There is plenty more and plenty of room for every one.

We've been fishing all sections of the Connecticut and the tributaries(when there not blown) and there are fish every where. We've even been fishing down below Lake Francis which has been producing some real nice fish on the occasion. For you that have heard about it, these are some of the sections that contain the newly found algae "Didymo"( the sections below Lake Francis) We've still been fishing these areas. Although we have been very diligent about trying not to spread this algae. After we fish these areas we spray and soak all of our "infective" gear in a mild bleach solution, which kills the algae instantly. This only takes a moment of time and only the slightest inconvenience. But if it helps the fishery. I feel it's the least I can do. The fishing in these areas can be only slightly more challenging but I feel has been fantastic. There seems to be plenty of fish and the hatches have been very prevalent. We've had tons of midges, light cahills and tricos, caddis and b.w.o's have still been very productive in the trophy stretch.

We have heard some good reports coming from the lakes department. There have been many people catching fish while trolling 1st, 2nd, and Francis. On lake Francis we've heard that there have been plenty of fish marked right down on the bottom, but as the evening rolls along these fish will come right and get within the  top 12 to 20 feet of the surface. The reports says at this time the fishing have been fast and furious,"sounds like Fun".

We are suppose to get some nicer weather real so here this weekend. that will be a welcome change. A little bit of rain here and there isn't bad but the downpours just muck things up for a while. But with the flows coming big into the lakes the way they have with the high water. This should certainly stir up some fish and maybe get some of those bigger fish to run up from the lakes into the rivers, which is always a delightful surprise.

Thank You all for reading and hope to see you all soon. We'll catch some fish together.

   Tight Lines,   PEACE    BILL
