With spring on its way, its hard not to think about the upcoming season! Fishing gets started in Pittsburg at about the time the ice leaves the big lakes. When is ice out? One First Lake, the ice generally leave around May 2nd. This hold true for Lake Francis and Second Lake but Third Lake may hold its ice for another week. Back Lake ices out about a week ahead of First Lake as does Moose Pond and Middle Pond.
If you come up fishing in early May, your best spots to try include Moose Pond, Middle Pond, Back Lake, in the river by the Lake Francis State Campground and below the bridge on Magalloway Rd.
Early flies to try include the Grey Ghost, Magog Smelt, Wooley Bugger in Grey or Black, Beadhead Sedge, Black Nosed Dace, Joe's Smelt, beadhead pheasant tail or a blue winged olive.
